People are surprised because of his “family first” messaging. Subconsciously, people are either thinking this only involves time with children sans the husband and wife dynamic OR means that the husband and wife are living a fairlytale life with happy, healthy children destined to be together forever.

That’s the problem with modern “family first” messaging. For majority married Americans, divorce is ALWAYS on the table in pursuit of “the better deal” because “I deserve [insert benign reason such as happiness here].”
