I dunno if I 100% agree with this. Sure if you’re a complete noob, insecure about your writing, or just haven’t found your voice yet, may be you should just write.

But even then what’s written may not be fit for this platform; it’s probably best for a private journal entry, or the Apple Notes app.

I think what would have been better advised are suggestions on what the readers SHOULD read to better help them in their writing.

For instance, Stephen King’s counsel on adverbs from his memoir On Writing was excellent for me. It made my writing stronger not depending on single-worded exaggerations to express emotional tone in a sentence.

I personally ENJOY reading a ton of Medium articles being able to highlight and adding my two cents to the conversation. I’m an active participant in this writing community.

And you know what? Sometimes people write things that strike an emotional nerve sparking an article on its own.

That piece either is a long form rebuttal, a research essay, or a response to support that writers purpose for crafting the article.

I think some context and structure provided before advising readers not to read other writers (especially on Medium) would have been better.

Any reader hopefully with half a mind would possess their own POV and not resort to being “sheeple”: following any and everything without questioning or challenging position.

I can almost joke in expressing that your ulterior motives are, “Stop reading others work except mine! Or when you’re done reading this article, stop reading altogether and just write guy (or gal).”

Ironically, the opposite of your proposal is what got me here ranting with a vengeance.

In conclusion, I agree that a writer’s output should be more than their consumption. But to not read I think would be a detriment to the writer.
